Kitcheree
A 40 day diet of kitcheree is a wonderful way to detox the body and cultivate balance and clarity to the mind.
If you decide to follow this diet you will find that the discipline required to maintain your focus will give you great mental strength and a clear mind.
When I do this diet I keep my daily intake of food as fresh as possible.
Breakfast
Yogi tea and fresh fruit.
Lunch
Salad which includes: avocado, cucumber, beetroot with a dressing of lemon and flax oil which is great for the skin. If I feel exceptionally hungry I will include a portion of kitcheree.
Dinner
Kitcheree (see recipe)
Include plenty of water and yogi tea in your diet to help flush out the whole body system.
I also recommend taking ‘internal pure drainage’ by ortis which includes a number of herbs to reinforce the detox process.
Colonic hydrotherapy is also a wonderful way to get the maximum from your cleansing process. A list of recommended colonic hydrotherapist is available on this website. Always call first for advice and a consultation if it is your first treatment.
Kitcheree

- 1 cup of basmati rice
- 9 cups of water
- 4-6 cups of chopped assorted vegetables of your choice
- Half a medium onion chopped
- 1/3 of a cup of minced ginger peeled
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 heaped teaspoon of turmeric
- Half a teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 heaped teaspoon of garam masala
- 1 teaspoon of crushed chillies (green are good for woman as they are high in vitamin c)
- 1 tablespoon of fresh basil
- 2 bay leaves
- Seeds of five cardamon pods
- If you like salt use seasalt to taste or tamari a wheat free soya sauce.
This recipe serves 4-6.
Kitcheree can last for 4 days so if you choose to eat kitcheree for 40 days double the recipe and cook a fresh batch every 4 days.
Method
- Rinse beans and rice
- Bring water to the boil and add beans and rice and let them boil over a medium heat.
- Prepare the vegetables and then add to the cooking beans and rice.
- Heat half a cup of olive oil or ghee in a large frying pan. Add the onions , garlic and ginger and cook over a medium flame until they begin to brown. Add the turmeric, pepper, garam masala and chillies. When done add the mixture to the cooking beans, rice and vegetables.
- Stir the pot to prevent scorching, add the herbs and continue to cook until completely well done. The consistency should be rich, thick and stew –like, with ingredients barely discernible. The mung beans should be split open and soft.
Serve alone or with a dollop of live yogurt, I like to include salad too.
Enjoy!!

Yogi tea
Yogi tea is great for the blood, colon, nervous system, and liver; the list is endless. Because of the spices and the ginger it is also good for colds and flu as it warms and detoxes the body.
The following yogi tea recipe is the original Yogi Bhajan recipe-it is a delicious potent feel good drink.
Ingredients
- 10 handfuls of filtered water
- 8 slices of fresh ginger root finely diced
- 12 cloves
- 16 green cardamom pods cracked
- 16 black peppercorns
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 4 black tea teabags (black tea is normal tea bags or loose tea)
- 1 double handful of milk/soya milk (optional)
- honey to taste (optional)
Method
- In a saucepan bring the water to the boil, then add the spices. Cover and simmer the spiced liquid for 15-20 minutes.
- Remove from the heat, add the teabags and let them steep in the liquid for 2 minutes.Add the milk and bring to the boil. Remove from heat immediately.
- Add a teaspoon of honey to the cup, strain off the spices and serve.
NOTE: 2 double handfuls of liquid is equal to 250ml.
Recommendation
From my own experience I like to add a chopped up Medjool date to the cup before serving. Pour the tea over the date in the cup and leave to steep, you can then take the date out of the cup .The sweetness of the date adds a wonderful flavour to the tea.
Enjoy!!
